Ethnic wear brand Akutee makes grand debut, crafts elegance with rich heritage

Sagarika Ghatge introduced her bespoke brand, Akutee, at an exclusive preview event hosted at the Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai’s members club, Modernist. The brand, conceptualized by the mother-daughter team of Urmila and Sagarika Ghatge, is a testament to India’s cultural heritage, inspired by the grace and simplicity of the Ghatge family’s women, the brand announced in a release on Thursday.

The launch event featured a captivating display of Akutee garments and the traditional ‘khaat’ used for hand-painting, creating an immersive experience for attendees. The evening was marked by stories, warm conversations, and an appreciation for true beauty and elegance.

Distinguished guests, including cricketing legends Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Ashish Nehra, Rohan Gavaskar, and Ajit Agarkar, were in attendance. Actors Huma Qureshi, Rhea Chakraborty, and Prachi Desai added a touch of glamour to the evening. Nandita Ghatge, Sagarika’s Kaki and author of ‘Ghatges, the Rise of Royal Dynasty,’ shared intriguing excerpts from her book, offering insights into the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Marathas that inspire the brand.

The event featured a specially composed classical soundtrack by sarod artists Ayaan and Amaan Ali Bangash, creating a harmonious atmosphere. The juxtaposition of Akutee’s heritage-inspired art with Modernist’s contemporary interiors highlighted the brand’s commitment to blending tradition with modern lifestyles.

Sagarika Ghatge, growing up surrounded by regal women, drew inspiration from the elegance and poise of her family members. She vividly recalls the graceful draping of chanderis, chiffons, tissues, and brocades by the women at family gatherings. Their choice of understated jewelry, including pearls, glass bangles, and a few diamonds, left a lasting impression.

Sagarika’s mother, Urmila, played a pivotal role in shaping her artistic sensibilities. Urmila began her artistic journey at the age of 16, focusing on hand-painted floral patterns that soon became her signature style. She not only perfected her art but also trained and mentored a group of young artists to bring Akutee’s unique style to life, the release added.

Akutee transcends conventional fashion, representing a labor of love and an expression of grace, poise, and artistry. It pays homage to rich textiles, intricate detailing, and hand-painted garments, embodying the elegance of a bygone era characterized by artistic talent and impeccable taste. Akutee remains faithful to its regal heritage while resonating with the contemporary spirit of today’s women.
