Meena Bindra, Founder and Chairperson of BIBA, launched her memoir, A Stitch in Time: The Biba Story, chronicling her entrepreneurial journey and the evolution of Indian fashion and retail. Former Union Minister of Women & Child Development, Smriti Irani, attended the event as the Chief Guest.
The book captures Bindra’s transition from childhood in Delhi to her life as a naval wife and, later, her entry into business at a time when women entrepreneurs were rare. It provides insights into her pioneering efforts to popularise the salwar kameez and her contributions to the organized retail sector in India.
Speaking at the launch, Smriti Irani said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the ‘bebe’ of BIBA on the launch of her memoir. BIBA has been instrumental in conserving and advancing the Indian textile industry within India and abroad. Her courage to start a business at the age of 40 in an era when women in business were rare stands as an inspiration for women and aspiring entrepreneurs across generations.”
Meena Bindra reflected on her journey, stating, “When I started, I had no grand ambitions—just a passion for design and the desire to earn pocket money. The ₹8,000 loan I took to start this venture changed my life and many others. A Stitch in Time is about following your heart, and I hope my story inspires others to pursue their dreams.”
Siddharath Bindra, Managing Director of BIBA, shared his perspective on his mother’s journey, saying, “Her story is not just about building a brand but about breaking barriers and redefining possibilities for women in India. I hope it inspires many more to dream big and embrace their unique journeys.”
The memoir also provides a perspective on the Indian fashion industry’s growth, from its modest beginnings to becoming a key part of the retail market, making it a valuable read for fashion enthusiasts and entrepreneurs.
